Number of Students: 390

Unsponsored Students: 160

Term Highlights:

  • We take immense pride in our soccer teams that participated in this year’s secondary school games competition for the very first time. Our boys advanced to the semi-finals, and our girls reached the quarter-finals. Congratulations to all our dedicated soccer players for their remarkable achievements!
  • Our boys handball team has also been actively engaged in various competitions throughout the year. Their hard work paid off as they secured a trophy and brought it home to showcase their accomplishment.
  • A special groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a girls’ dormitory was graced by our CEO and the Executive Director of I.D.S. Their presence also included motivational sessions with our students, leaving us eager for the new buildings in future.
  • In reflection, we express gratitude for our graduating class. Their journey led them to Nairobi for the first time, where they embarked on academic benchmarking at other MOHI centers. This experience exposed them to a world beyond Turkana, allowing them to forge new friendships and gain insights into diverse learning environments.

Transformation Story:

Tim*, a 21-year-old young man, comes from Lokitela village in Turkana Central, Turkana County. Both his parents are alive but divorced 11 years ago. His mother currently resides in a place called Lokichar, Turkana East. She lives with two of Tim’s siblings, while Tim and his other two younger sisters were left behind with their father. Tim’s father, who has four wives, supports the family through business, while his mother takes on casual jobs in Lokichar.

Growing up, Tim and his siblings faced challenges at home, particularly due to their relationship with their stepmother, who treated them poorly and showed no care for their well-being. This difficult environment led them to become exposed to street life at a young age. They often missed school, engaged in harmful behaviors like sniffing glue and using drugs. Tim, in particular, developed an addiction to this lifestyle, even with his social workers’ and teachers’ intervention, prayers and advice, Tim found it difficult to shake the lifestyle.

Despite what seemed like a hopeless situation his social workers and teachers did not give up on him. They would find him even when he would oscillate from either of his stepmother’s homes. The combined efforts of the school administration and the social worker were instrumental in helping Tim get back on track and make better, healthier choices for himself. The counseling and patience from the school chaplain and social worker paid off. Transformation became evident Tim returned to school at the beginning of 2023 without any coercion. He had ceased using drugs and there were no longer reports of him sneaking out of school. He had refocused on his studies, resulting in improved performance, and he was ready to take his final exams at the end of the year. This remarkable turnaround is a testament to his efforts and the support he received. We give thanks for this incredible transformation, attributing all the glory to God.

Partner Activity:

  • We were delighted to welcome Eastside Christian Church during this term. They actively took part in constructing two houses and spent quality afternoons with our students. Their presence was greatly uplifting, serving as a strong source of motivation.
  • We were also fortunate to host our Area Member of the County Assembly, who generously supports 45 of our students. He had a wonderful interaction with them, sharing valuable insights and encouraging them to strive for excellence in order to shape their own promising futures.

Prayer Request:

  • Please lift up our graduating class in prayer, asking God to grant them the strength they need as they prepare for their end-of-high-school tests this year. May they be filled with courage, good health, and determination to finish strong and achieve excellent results.
  • Let us also go before God on behalf of the families we serve, seeking His blessings of good health, nourishing food, and financial breakthroughs. May they experience His provision and abundance in every aspect of their lives. Let’s also pray for harmonious relationships with their neighboring communities and their own families.
  • As we unite in prayer, let’s remember the entire center – the students, teachers, and all staff members. May God bestow upon us good health and lift us spiritually to even greater heights than we’ve experienced this term.
