Transformation Story:

In a small village plagued by deviant behaviors, poverty, neglect, and domestic violence, a young boy named Eric* called this place home. His story is a testament to the transformative power of compassion, education, and unwavering determination.

Eric’s early life was marked by hardships. He and his family come from the Power neighborhood in Turkana County, Kenya. He faced the harsh realities of drug use, domestic violence, and a broken family. All of this became too much for his mother to bear. Eventually Eric’s mother and father separated. The children were left to be raised by his courageous mother. Eric and his four siblings struggled to make ends meet amidst a society plagued by poverty and malnourishment.

In 2013, a ray of hope emerged in the form of Missions of Hope International. MOHI was determined to transform lives in Turkana County, tackling hunger and despair head-on. The social workers and Community Health Evangelism trainers of MOHI visited the Power Village and set forth a chain of events that would alter Eric’s life forever.

Eric’s educational journey began at the age of seven when he joined kindergarten here in Napuu Center. Despite his initial challenges, including malnourishment and language barriers, he quickly adapted, progressing both academically and linguistically. With each passing term, his command of English and Kiswahili grew stronger.

MOHI’s intervention brought about a tremendous change in Eric and his family’s lives. They received nourishing meals through the feeding program, and the necessary tools to embark on their educational journey. Eric’s mother too, was empowered with business knowledge. She joined MOHI’s Technical Training Institute at the center and enrolled in business class. The skills that she learned enabled her to open a grocery stall and provide for her family. This greatly eased the financial burden that lay on her shoulders.

Eric’s hard work, discipline, and determination set him apart. Excelling in his exams, he recently achieved an impressive score in his end-of-term exams. His commitment to education, coupled with his respect for teachers and peers, led to his election to leadership in the school’s student government.

Beyond academics, Eric experienced a profound personal transformation. His mother’s acceptance of Jesus Christ during an evangelism crusade in the village influenced him. It ignited his own spiritual journey. He embraced his faith, becoming an active participant in school devotions and a valued member of the school’s Christian Union.

Eric’s story is a powerful testament to resilience. Through the intervention of MOHI, he emerged from a desolate background to become a determined young individual with boundless potential. Eric dreams of becoming a surgeon. He aspires to make a difference and heal lives in the future. We thank God for Eric and his family and the role that MOHI has played in transforming his life, bringing him to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ.
