Transformation Story:

Sam*, Peter*, and June* are siblings and students at our Missions of Hope Milimani center. They joined our school in 2018 when they were in second grade. Currently, Sam is 17 years old, Peter is 14, and June is 13. These three students recently transitioned to junior high, overcoming challenges along the way.

They are from a family of nine and are led by a single mother who relies on casual labor with low pay, making it difficult to meet the family’s basic necessities.

Residing in the Posta area near Molo town, the children’s journey to Missions of Hope Milimani began when a MOHI social worker identified their family’s need for support. Their father had left the family long ago, leaving the children in their mother’s care.

As the family struggled, things became increasingly difficult. Despite their older brother dropping out of school to work on a farm and their sister becoming a house help, the family’s situation did not improve. Eventually, their sister got married, and their brother lost his job. This led their mother to turn to alcohol. In many instances, Sam had to fetch her using a wheelbarrow when she was unable to walk due to drunkenness. Facing the transition to sixth grade, we reported the family’s situation to the MOHI leadership, seeking assistance to get the children fully taken care of by MOHI, which would allow them to continue their education. The mother was offered a job as a cleaner at MOHI Coram Deo, which marked a turning point for the family. The mother’s faith and life have transformed, and her children are now able to attend school regularly.

With the mother’s newfound job stability, the family’s situation improved significantly. Even one of her youngest daughters, Lucy, who had not yet started kindergarten at the age of 7, joined our Milimani school in February and is thriving academically.

The positive changes in the children’s academic performance and their relationship with their mother are evident. This transformation has provided the mother with relief and the ability to focus on her job and provide for her family.

In terms of aspirations, Sam is diligently working towards becoming a bus driver, Peter has dreams of becoming a pilot, June envisions a career as an actor, and Lucy aspires to become a teacher. We’re grateful for the opportunity given to the mother and pray that God’s transformative work continues in their lives.
