Transformation Story:
Susan*, a determined grade eight student at Missions of Hope Madoya center, is a 17-year-old from a family of four, where she’s the eldest. Her home is in the humble Madoya area near the school. Her family situation has been challenging due to her parents’ divorce caused by family conflicts. Currently, her family resides with her grandmother, as both her parents have been struggling with substance abuse involving drugs and alcohol. This struggle has led them to pay less attention to their children’s lives and be less involved with social workers, including commitment fee payments and meeting attendance. Consequently, Susan has faced a lack of parental support in various aspects of her life.
In October 2022, Susan’s absence from school raised concerns. Her social worker visited her home to understand the situation. It was discovered that Susan had become pregnant. This unfortunate event strained her relationship with her grandmother and left her feeling hopeless about her future and education. It took considerable effort to encourage and persuade her that despite her circumstances, she could still make positive strides in life. After several months of caring for her baby, she decided to return to school, as we had discussed the possibility of continuing her studies.
Susan is currently able to attend school and care for her child during extended breaks and lunch hours. She resides with her mother, where her aunt assists in caring for the child while Susan attends classes. Our ongoing support for Susan ensures that she has the necessary resources to complete her education, as her family situation doesn’t provide the financial means to cover her school fees. She is eager to continue her education beyond primary school, and we are committed to aiding her in this pursuit.
