Transformation Story:

Mark is a student at Missions of Hope International Korogocho B. He’s currently in fourth grade and is 10 years old. He’s accompanied by an older brother who is also part of the program. Both of their parents are still present in their lives.

Mark’s life journey has had its challenges, but his mother has always been a guiding force, caring for him and his sibling. She actively engaged with Missions of Hope and looked after their welfare. However, in 2021, an opportunity arose for Mark’s mother to work abroad as a casual laborer. While this was meant to provide for her family, it brought about negative impacts on the children.

Mark’s father loves his children, yet his battle with alcohol addiction hinders his involvement in their upbringing. He’s scarcely able to attend school meetings or contribute to school commitment fees. His dependency on alcohol has led to regrettable actions within the neighborhood, including theft, selling household items, and leaving his children without basic necessities. Despite efforts by our social worker and even involving local authorities, the situation remained challenging.

The children’s school attendance was irregular, and the social worker had to make regular follow-up visits to their home. Mark’s teachers voiced concerns about the boys and their well-being. With counseling from both social workers and teachers, it became clear that the children missed their mother dearly and yearned for communication with her. Gradually, counseling made a positive impact, and Mark began attending school more frequently, without further persuasion. Despite the fact that they arrived disheveled and dirty looking, the school offered soap and water so that they could bathe and wash their clothes.

The social workers managed to establish contact with the children’s aunt, who acted as their guardian. Through her, the children were able to reconnect with their mother via phone. The aunt also provided them with essential items. Ongoing efforts continue to reach out to Mark’s father, encouraging him to seek assistance for his addiction. There’s also a sense of hope that Mark’s mother can return home, reuniting the family once again.
