Greetings from Baba Dogo! Another exciting school term has come to an end and we want to share some of the highlights with you. Thank you for your support and partnership as we work to transform lives through the hope of Christ.

Transformation Story:

Linda* is a thirteen-year-old girl in class seven at our Baba Dogo center. She lives with her mother, two sisters, and cousin in a single-roomed house. Linda joined Missions of Hope in 2013 in Kindergarten but left at the end of 2017 while in class 2. The family relocated to the countryside due to the economic challenges they were experiencing.

At the time, Linda’s father was the only one working and when he couldn’t fend for the family anymore, he moved them to their rural home in Busia County. Once they relocated he abandoned his family there and moved back to Nairobi.

The mother and her children stayed in Busia until 2020 when they came back to Nairobi after working on people’s farms to raise the bus fare.  When they arrived the family was accommodated by a good Samaritan.

When Covid 19 hit in 2020, many companies closed and many families lost their sources of income. The good samaritan who accommodated Linda and her family lost her job and could no longer support the family. The good samaritan relocated leaving Linda’s family in the empty house. The mother was left hopeless as she was unable to pay rent or provide food for her family.

At the time, Missions of Hope was issuing food to parents and community members. Linda and her siblings would camp outside our school gate. We would invite them in and share meals with them. We became interested in the family when we noticed that the children would sit outside of the school every day so we decided to get to know more about the family. They took us to their home and we were moved by the family’s story and the state of living.

The room was small and stuffy with no furniture. There was a small stove in the corner and two small cooking pots. There were clothes strewed all over and their mother was lying down. She was frail and we later found out that she had not eaten for two days. We bought milk and ‘mandazi’ (a popular fried dough) for them and when the mother had gained strength, she narrated to us her story. We learned that Linda used to be in Missions of Hope and had left in October 2017. The family benefitted from the food baskets that Missions of Hope was issuing to the community.

We rallied some of our parents and managed to get the family a bed, mattress, and some groceries. The social workers walked with the family and the mother managed to secure a casual job as a waitress.

Linda was later readmitted to our Baba Dogo Center in 2021 in class five. Her younger sister was also recruited and joined grade two. The two sisters are doing well in school and performing well above average. Linda is a disciplined member of the Scouts movement.

Their mother later joined a parent’s group and through her savings, she has managed to open a small business which is doing well. She is able to provide for her family and has gone to the extent of sponsoring another child at our Baba Dogo Centre.

The family are committed members of Outreach Hope Church Baba Dogo. Linda and her mother are born again and love the Lord. We thank God and Missions of Hope for transforming this family through the hope of Christ.

Term Highlights:

• We are proud of our soccer team boys, they participated in a local community soccer tournament and emerged as the second-best team.
• We are proud of our grade eight students who participated in a practical science lesson at Kiambu Science Practical Center. It was very informative. They really gained a lot of knowledge.

Partner Activity:

• We were happy to have Christ Church of the Valley in Arizona (CCV) special needs team visit Baba Dogo this term. They participated in Vacation Bible School with 34 parents and 34 children with special needs. Children engaged in crafts work and games.
• We appreciate CCV for doing 10 home visits in our community. They went around sharing the word of God with our parents and prayed with them.
• CCV special needs team also took our 34 parents with 34 children with special needs for a fun day at a beautiful park. The kids really enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun.
