Term Highlights:

  • We participated in the National Drama Festival for the first time! We managed to qualify for the regional festival competition. We had a lot of fun in the competition and we also learned from other schools and presentations.
  • We are very proud of our music group which participated in the sub-county music festivals where several musical items qualified for presentation at the regional level. We are delighted to have presented 18 items.
  • Our boys’ soccer team represented us remarkably in the soccer competition. Despite the stiff competition, our students were selected to be a part of the sub-county team.

Transformation Story:

Mary’s family resides in Area 2 village within the Mathare slums. Mary is the youngest among three siblings. Her other two siblings no longer live with their father. They moved away with their mother due to family disputes. This left Mary living alone with her father.

Mary’s family used to live together, but they separated when Mary was only 2 years old. Their mother struggled with alcohol addiction and neglected her responsibilities as a parent. She would often spend days consuming alcohol with her friends, engaging in day-and-night drinking, and reappearing the following day. During all of this, Mary’s father attempted to caution his wife about her behavior, but she was unwilling to change.

Over time, her mother’s behavior deteriorated, creating a distressing scenario for Mary. Due to her drinking habits, she would leave Mary in an empty water barrel and then spend the entire day drinking. Mary’s father had a tight working schedule so he would have to leave Mary in the care of her mother while he went to work. He would come home to find Mary in the empty barrel alone while her mother had gone to the bar.

The situation was not getting any better so Mary’s father decided to separate from his wife and care for Mary himself. When Mary became of school-going age, she was enrolled in MOHI’s Area 2 center. Mary was skinny, frail and she appeared small for her age. Our nurses from the Pangani clinic sprung into action and provided care for her. She was fed twice a day while at MOHI and had food sent to her home to make sure she had eaten. The Community Health and Evangelism (CHE) department collaborated with the Pangani nurses to facilitate this assistance.

Currently, Mary is in junior high. She is healthy and strong. She enjoys school and is doing well academically. Mary’s father is grateful to Missions of Hope for giving Mary the support she needed to become the strong and healthy girl she is right now. We thank God for Mary and her family.
