Nyeri Center is located in the central region of Kenya about 95 miles (153km) from Nairobi. The center’s location is home to approximately 8000 people who are a mix of different tribes of Kenya. The community lives in an informal settlement which lies on government owned land. Poverty levels are high in this area. Many of the people have had no formal education thus their main source of income is casual labor in the nearby coffee farms, petty trading and selling home brewed alcohol.
The people majorly identify as Christians however they do not particularly practice the faith. Some of the major challenges in the community include: joblessness, teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school, domestic violence, and drug and substance abuse.
MOHI seeks to help this community transform holistically. The soil in the region is fertile, the rain is reliable thus presenting opportunities for the community to farm. Using the school as a contact point with the community, we can bring the transformative power of the gospel of Jesus through economic empowerment, quality Christian education and health care services.
