Mathare North is home to approximately 85,000 people. The major religions in this community are Christianity and African indigenous religions. The main economic activities in the area are small-scale businesses such as grocery shops. Some of the major challenges in the community include; unemployment, crime, drug addiction (especially among the youth), illiteracy, teenage pregnancies, and school dropout.
Mathare North center continues to grow steadily. In addition to providing quality christian education, the staff members reach out to the community and evangelize to individuals, families and groups.
As a result, a church was planted in the community and various development groups were established. During the center’s existence, the community has experienced remarkable improvements in security, household income, infrastructure and sanitation.
