Our Lochoredome center is located in Turkana county which is over 700 kilometers (over 430 Miles) away from Nairobi. Lochorodome serves families in the community who are a part of one of the most marginalized nomadic communities in Kenya.
Lochoredome is located in a very hot and dry area in Kenya, where there is little to no rainfall a year, so the people cannot farm. The main economic activity is cattle and goat keeping. The women also weave mats, build family houses (manyattas), and take care of the homestead. Due to the climate, the community is forced to move from place to place in search of pasture and water for their animals. The literacy levels are very low. Boys of school-going age are given the responsibility of herding cattle while the girls stay home to take care of the household. They are often married off at an early age in exchange for bride price. Lochoredome is in a very remote part of the country, healthcare is either too far away or of poor quality.
The Lochoredome community approached MOHI to start a school in their community after 20 learners attend our school in Napuu, 99 kilometers( 61 miles) away from Lochoredome. When the learners would come home, they brought a good report and the community began to value education and the work that MOHI did for other communities. The community wanted a school closer to them as the nearest school was 15 kilometers away. As a result, the community gave 100 students to start the school in Lochoredome.
