Kibarani

Center Overview

Kibarani

Kibarani school is located off the Kilifi-Malindi highway; 6 miles away from Kilifi town and 331 miles from Nairobi. Kibarani is home to approximately 24,500 people mainly from the Mijikenda tribe. The people here are mostly small-scale farmers and casual laborers. They mainly farm for their own consumption and a little to sell to make ends meet. The community is made up of Christians.

The people living in the Kibarani area are relatively poor. The literacy levels are fairly low as most of the adults have not gone to school and students in lower classes struggle to read and write.

Some of the major challenges the community faces is alcoholism, joblessness, teenage pregnancies and dropping out of school to help make a living. MOHI’s presence in the community has given the students a chance to break the cycle of poverty; giving them the opportunity to stay in school and finish their education. The Church in Kibarani has been a pillar in bringing social and moral change to the members of the community.
