Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Brian* is in grade 3 and lives with his mother and brother, who is in form three at Ndovoini Boys. Their mother is a casual laborer and does not have a stable and reliable source of income to support the family. One day Brian came to school late and unhappy. The teacher had asked the class to come with some supplies for a project, but Brian came with none. The teacher asked Brian why he had not come with the materials, and Brian started crying. The teacher asked the social worker to follow up and find out what was going on at home. Our social worker talked to Brian and he said that he did not bring the materials because his mother was sick and not able to buy the materials.

Our social worker was aware that the mother had been unwell and visiting different hospitals. Brian’s mother was unable to get help because the medical results showed that there was nothing wrong with her. However, the mother’s tummy was growing bigger every day. During home visits, she used to tell our social worker that she is strong, but one day when our social worker visited Brian’s mother said that she has lost all hope and she wanted to go home with her children and die there in order to avoid high cost during her burial.

This was the turning point of her life story. Brian’s mother had a swollen stomach with something moving inside and it was very painful so she could not sit or walk by herself. She believed it was witchcraft because she had gone to different hospitals, and all tests and ultrasounds showed that there was nothing wrong with her. She believed that her husband had left her for another woman and that she bewitched her. She was left to depend on her sister who is married and has her own family. We prayed with her and encouraged her with the word of God.

The following day our social worker visited the home with a group of other social workers, the spiritual development officer, and interns who were attached to our department. They prayed with her and encouraged her with the Word of God. We encouraged her to start speaking into her situation in Jesus’ name and also be reading the Word of God and praying for herself. Brian’s mother was touched by their immense love and constant visiting and she gave her life to Jesus during our second visit. The group committed to visiting her and praying with her. Through faith she started recovering, slowly she started to talk, walk, and with time she was able to sit down and feed herself and do a few house chores.

Eventually, Brian’s mother was completely healed. She came to school to testify of what the Lord had done. She was able to resume her casual jobs and meet Brian’s needs like the school materials. Though she still struggles to pay the entire commitment fee, she shows her commitment with the little that she gets. We thank God for the transformation.
