Hope Transforms: A Success Story

*Selah is a grade one student at Missions of Hope International (MOHI) Olturot. The nine-year-old comes from a family of six children and they live with their mother who is widowed.

Selah’s family used to stay in Kargi, but they came to Olturot after her father passed away. Our social worker met with the family to discuss the child’s well-being and it was from these discussions that Selah was enrolled at the school in 2019. When she joined as a kindergarten student, she could not speak Swahili or English and she was only conversant in her local dialect.

Today, Selah is ahead of her peers and she is able to communicate in both Swahili and English. She is a role model to other students because she is one of the most disciplined students. She performs well in class and always participates in extracurricular activities. She really likes singing. She is also now a Christian who knows the Word of God.

Selah says her dream is to work in the IT industry and we know that with her hard work and positive attitude, God will enable her to realize this dream. We thank God for the work He is doing through MOHI in order to bring transformation into the lives of children such as Selah.

Term Highlights

  • We thank God for the provision of funds that have enabled us to start the construction of six additional classrooms.
  • We held a colorful graduation ceremony for our 70 kindergarten students who are set to join grade one on April 25th. It has been exciting watching these young ones learn how to read and write.
  • We had a successful nutrition assessment of our students. Due to the drought being experienced in this region, some of our students were found to be malnourished and are currently taking some supplements in order to boost their health.
  • Our students’ school attendance has improved this term and this has made it easier for us to keep the learning going as envisioned.

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for our students as they break for the long holiday, that they will stay safe and be in good health.
  • Join us as we pray for rain. Our region has been adversely affected by the ongoing drought and our pastoral community is losing livestock due to lack of pasture.
  • Pray for peace in the Olturot region and in Marsabit at large. This area has communities that once in a while get into conflict primarily due to livestock theft.
