Hope Transforms: A Success Story

John* is one of our community members here in our Namarei Center. John is a father of 8 children, two of which have been admitted to our school and are currently in Kindergarten. John is a respectable man in the community and runs successful businesses that support his children and his family.
Just like many other members of our community, they struggle with understanding the importance of education. John was a victim of this before our social worker began to talk with him. Though John had allowed his two children to join the school, John did not cooperate with the teachers to ensure that both his children stayed in school and were supported.
John would refuse to pay the small commitment fee for one of his children, but would pay for the other. John would argue that his son was still too young to go to school, he would also argue that the little boy was unable to walk to school each morning. John would then pull his son out of school and give him the task of grazing the family goats. For about a whole school term his son was grazing goats.
This was when our social worker decided to have a candid discussion with John and his wife. Our social worker paid them a visit one day unannounced and was lucky to not only find John, but his wife as well. Our social worker told them of his journey with education, narrating the harrowing tales of trying to navigate obtaining an education without the love and support of a parent. They were told of the benefits of educating a child and having that child in school. This touched John’s heart and he agreed to allow his little boy to go to school uninterrupted.
We have seen John change, he has become a more supportive and committed father to his children’s education. He now pays the commitment fee on time and attends parent meetings. He has not only become committed to their education, but to their spiritual growth as well. He and these children have become devout members of a nearby church. We thank God for this transformation.
