Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Grace* is now in Grade 4 at our Mathare North Center. We first met Grace when she was in grade 2 in 2019 when she was recruited into our school. Grace lived with her mother and her aunt here in Mathare North. Her family was very grateful to be able to have Grace in the program as her mother was determined to provide quality education for her daughter.
Early this year Grace’s mother lost her job here in Nairobi. She decided to leave her daughter with her sister as she went back to her parent’s home in rural Kenya. While there she would look for work to try and support herself.
While Grace’s mother was gone. Grace was absent from school for a few days. Her teachers became concerned and sent her social workers to investigate. The social workers paid Grace and her aunt a visit. Once they arrived they found out that Grace had fallen ill and had been left home alone with no food or medical care for some time.
Grace’s social worker called Grace’s mum telling her the situation her daughter was in. Grace’s mother got on the next bus to Nairobi. When they confronted Grace’s aunt about the neglect she was without remorse. She did not see Grace as her responsibility and did not want to take care of her.
Conflicted because she did not want to take Grace out of school. Grace’s mother, however, saw that Grace was not safe with her sister and decided to take Grace to live with her in rural Kenya.
While they were there, Grace’s social worker kept in touch with both of them. Grace’s mother was encouraged to continue looking for a job in Nairobi so that Grace can come back to our Mathare North Center. God heard their prayers and 3 months later, Grace’s mother got a job as a tailor in one of the dress-making companies here in the Mathare area.
Once they moved back to Nairobi, Grace was immediately readmitted into our program. Grace is now happy, healthy, and doing well in school. She and her mother are grateful for the kind of care and concern they have received from MOHI.

Term Highlights

- We are so proud of our students who graduated from kindergarten! Our little ones were so happy and ready to transition to primary school in the new school year.
- This term our grade 6 girls went to Angaza Discovery Camp in Kilifi for mentorship. They spent two weeks having fun and being mentored and discipled. They came back with lots of life-changing stories. We thank God that 31 of them gave their lives to Christ. They are going through the new believer’s class in preparation for baptism.
Prayer Requests

- We thank God for our Grade 6 and 8 students who sat for their national exams. We pray that they have a smooth transition to junior high and high school.
- Pray with us as we pursue important documentation from the government. Getting registration can be frustrating and tedious. We pray for favor as we work with the government to secure them.
