Hope Transforms: A Success Story

A family with four boys came from the Mabatini community and had been in our Mabatini school while in primary school. The boys come from a family of 5 children and they have a younger sister who is also in our Mabatini Center. Their mother is the sole breadwinner of the family as their father fell sick and became bedridden.

While in the MOHI program the boys were enrolled in different schools across the country. During this time the boys eventually no longer saw the value in their education and did not take responsibility for it. This led to the boys no longer attending school.

Once the boys were home they began to fend for themselves in different ways. They began to have a bad attitude towards school and would refuse to cooperate. But many MOHI staff cared about the boys and about their future. Many times when children from the slum area drop out of school they get involved with vices such as drug and alcohol abuse or crime.

Our social workers, teachers, and other staff began to talk to the boys and counsel them. The social workers worked hard to keep tabs on the boys, encouraging them to come back to school and not get enticed in the illusion that the money they can make now is better than the impact education can make on their future.

It took a lot of effort and counseling to convince the boys to come back to school but eventually, they began to see its value. They agreed to join our high school in Ndovoini where the boys are now doing much better. They all have individual dreams of getting out of the slum and helping their parents create a better life for their little sister.

Term Highlights

  • We managed to hold a successful prayer meeting for our grade 6 and 8 before they did their national exams. Their parents joined us as we committed them to God.
  • The scouts went to a camp at the city park where they learned a lot and had fun. They have been able to perfect their skills as scouts.

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for the candidates who sat for their national exams. We pray for a smooth transition as they move to junior secondary and high school.
  • Pray for our families to be safe and well. Pray for the families who were affected by a fire that happened during the term and had all their belongings destroyed.
