Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Calvin is a grade eight student at Missions of Hope International (MOHI) Korogocho Nyayo center.  The 14-year-old joined us as a kindergarten student and is among the students who did their primary school exit national exams this year (2021).

We are proud of the student he has been but in 2017, his future did not look so bright. During this season, his parents separated and their father left the home leaving him and his younger sister to live with their mother. This separation affected Calvin psychologically; his academic performance dropped, he started misbehaving, bullying others in the school as well as his sister at home and also disrespecting his mother.

Social workers and teachers started offering guidance counseling to this family. They developed a friendly rapport with Calvin which enabled him to open up and share what was troubling him. As we continued to encourage him and remind him of the responsibility he has towards his future, we started seeing a change. Not only did his academic performance start improving, but his mother also reported that he was now a well-behaved, respectful son and a good older brother who is very helpful around the house.

We have a lot of confidence that Calvin will do well in his national exam because we have seen all the effort he has put in. We pray that he gets a grade that will usher him into one of the country’s top high schools. We also pray that the lessons he has gained through mentorship, guidance and counseling will stay with him even in high school.

Term Highlights

  • We had a Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and parents meetings this term to educate and enlighten the community at large about Covid-19, its causes and prevention measures and we are glad to testify that the community has been able to adhere to these protocols and no cases have been reported. We bless the Lord.
  • We have had our grade three and grade four learners engage in various school projects (like water conservation and cooking projects) that are in line with the new school curriculum. These projects have enabled our students to be more creative, enthusiastic and able to solve many problems at school and at home.
  • We have had several spiritual programs for all our learners (from PP1 to grade eight) throughout the term. These programs have helped shape the attitudes and behavior of our students thereby enabling them to do well in their end-term exams.

  • Join us in prayer as we trust God for provision so that we can acquire our own premises.
