Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Bernice is a single mother of four and a mother to twins who are kindergarten students at Missions of Hope International (MOHI) Kiamaiko center.

Her children joined the MOHI program last year, in January of 2020, and since then, we have been walking with her to encourage her through the various challenges she has encountered. Trouble started for Bernice and her young children after she was separated from her husband. While she was still married, Bernice was a housewife and was dependent on her husband for the family’s sustenance.

After he left, she was left to take care of the children and without any means of livelihood, she ended up doing casual jobs. With the little she was making, she could only afford to rent a dilapidated tin house that leaked when it rained and had no sewerage system such that raw sewage overflowed into the house. They would often sleep hungry whenever Bernice was unable to secure a job and her children’s health was greatly affected.

After we recruited the children, we ensured they would benefit from the nutritious meals given at the school. We also started counseling sessions with Bernice who was so overwhelmed and would often break down and cry. From our talks, she confided that she was praying to God for her situation to change, for her children to live in a better home and to start her own business.

We prayed together and brainstormed together on possible business ideas she could pursue and Bernice settled on selling tea leaves to the families in Kiamaiko and its environs. From this business she started, Bernice has been able to move her children to a better home; she is able to meet all their basic needs and comfortably pay the commitment fee. We will continue walking with Bernice and praying for her as we keep trusting God to do even greater things for this family.

We give all glory to God for what He has done for Bernice and her children this far! We have seen God’s intervention for and on behalf of this family and we rejoice together with them.
