Hope Transforms: A Success Story

Jessica* is 6 years old and the fifth born from a family of 6 children who live with their mother in the Area 2 section of Mathare Valley. Her father left because of unreconcilable differences between him and their mother, leaving Jessica and her siblings under the care of a single parent.
During the day most days, you could find Jessica hanging around MOHI Area 2 Center hoping to get some food at lunchtime. Her mother has a drug and alcohol addiction and therefore doesn’t pay much attention to her younger children. The majority of the time Jessica’s mother drinks with her friends leaving Jessica to fend for herself.
Her family’s social worker would visit the home often and find Jessica crying outside longing for someone to listen to and comfort her. Jessica would often ask her social worker when she could join the school. She knew her two older siblings were at MOHI and they were taken care of. When Jessica became of age the social worker enrolled her at our school.
Now there are no more tears. Jessica is happy to be in school. She is now in 1st grade and doing very well in school. She likes her teacher, Margaret, who makes school enjoyable. Because of MOHI’s involvement in their lives, Jessica’s mother now drops all of her children at school in the morning. Though the battle with drugs and alcohol continues, her social worker continues to encourage her mother to come to church and leave the life of drugs and alcohol behind.
Jessica is happy to be in school and around people who care for her and her family. Because her mother still struggles with addiction she and her family are grateful for all the support they have received from MOHI over the years. Jessica now has a chance to change her life and her family’s life.

Term Highlights

- We are happy for our learners who participated in different activities in the center. The learners competed among themselves in things like debate, drama, and music competitions.
- We appreciate God for the completion of the construction in our center. The learners are enjoying using their new classrooms. The now fully constructed building has 26 classrooms, 3 offices, a kitchen, and a computer lab. The new building now has enough space to comfortably host all the 741 students and 43 staff members.
Prayer Requests

- We are trusting God for the installation of a computer lab in our center.
- We are also trusting God for the installation of solar panels in our center. Because of the vandalism of the power lines and transformers, the power company removed its services in the community. This means that there is no power for lighting, charging staff laptops, or powering desktops, water pumps, or the internet. Having solar panels would solve the electricity problem.
