Bura

Bura area is in Eastern Kenya with an estimated population of about 10,000 people. The communities in this region are majorly Muslims. Their main economic activity is farming and pastoralism.
Bura is a marginalized and remote region with inadequate social amenities like health centers, primary and high schools and vocational training centers. There are high levels of illiteracy due to the distance from home to the few schools, unemployment and low school attendance.
Before our center began, young children in the area were not going to school because the available public schools were very far. The older children who managed to go to the public schools did not acquire the requisite competencies as expected and thus many could not read, write or communicate in fluent English.
After the children were enrolled in the MOHI school, they were eager to learn and acquire the requisite competencies. They are now able to read, write and communicate fluently in English language. Their self-esteem has greatly improved and have a great hope for their bright future.
