Turkana High School is located in one of the most marginalized communities in Kenya – Turkana. The Northern part of Kenya is dry, hot and desolate. The community we serve is located on the outskirts of the major town in the area called Lodwar town; making the community cosmopolitan. A majority of the people in the area are pastoralists and casual laborers. Members of the community are majorly Christians and Muslims.
Literacy in the community is low, only a few people can read and write. The community members would have to walk a very long distance to find a school. Most parents can not afford the transport cost to take their children to and from school. As a result, many of the children in the community never went to school. The boys were expected to herd the family animals while the girls stayed home doing house chores while they waited to be married off.
The challenges faced by the community include drug and substance abuse, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).
Missions of Hope has given students in the area the opportunity for a quality Christian high school education. This is giving the children from the marginalized community a chance to break from the cycle of poverty and be exposed to different cultures.
