Mabatini

Overview:

Mabatini is located in Mathare Valley. Its population is approximately 30,000 (6,000 households with an average of 5 people per home). The predominant ethnic communities are the Luo, Kikuyu, Kamba, and Luhya tribes from Kenya, and the Abagusi tribe from Uganda. The major religions in this community are Christianity and African indigenous religions. The economic activities in the area consist of small businesses and casual jobs. The houses are made of old iron sheets and mud walls. The major challenges include unemployment, crime, drug addiction, cults, witchcraft (especially among the youth), prostitution, and education truancy/drop out (especially for boys able to gain employment for low wages by collecting metals).

Our Mabatini center has grown steadily and rapidly since its opening in 2009. This tremendous growth was necessitated by the community's increasing demand for quality education. Mabatini continues to be a center of academic excellence, thanks to the partnership of our parents, teachers, and students. During the center's existence, the community has experienced remarkable improvements in security, household incomes, literacy, infrastructure, sanitation, and the health of children and the community due to the implementation of CHE teachings and practices.
