Elizabeth’s close proximity to the roaring sound of a jet engine at Lodwar
air strip both frightened and amazed her and James, her 2 ½-year-old
son. It was Elizabeth’s first time to stand that close to an airplane, let alone board one. She was leaving her remote Turkana home for Nairobi, a city she had only heard about but never visited. Despite her apprehension, Elizabeth’s strong desire and determination to seek medical attention for her son propelled her toward the plane, with James safely strapped on her back.
James was born with a cleft lip, a condition that stunted his ability to speak and eat, delaying him physically and developmentally. Our Missions of Hope International (MOHI) staff first met James’ family in 2013, when his siblings enrolled in school at our Napuu center. Their father tends livestock. Elizabeth cares for the children at home.
Elizabeth never dreamed that young James could receive medical care to repair his cleft lip. Proper facilities and trained doctors are not available where they live.
In partnership with Orphan’s Promise
, MOHI arranged funding and logistics for James to receive the necessary surgery at a local Nairobi hospital. Orphan’s Promise is a children’s ministry of The Christian Broadcasting Network that partners with local organizations worldwide to provide holistic care to orphans and vulnerable children.
Before surgery, James’ face was downcast, and his eyes were filled with sadness. After the successful surgery, James now shares a radiant smile with anyone who sees him. Elizabeth cannot contain her own smile, knowing that her son’s life has been immeasurably changed.
