First Class Graduates from Napuu Skills Training 27 Apr 2016

The majority of Turkana County residents lack basic necessities of life, like sustainable food sources, access to quality health care, education, and clean water. The poverty rate in Turkana County is approximately 94%, and only 18% of the population can read and write.* MOHI responded to these needs by starting Napuu resource center in Lodwar, Turkana, in 2013. More than 950 children currently receive a quality, Christian education, nutritious meals, and healthcare at Napuu.

To empower their parents and other community members to earn a better living for their families, we started a skills training program at Napuu in 2015. We recruited parents from some of the most impoverished families to train for nine months in tailoring/ fashion design. We are excited to share that nine women from this first class of students graduated from the program earlier this year!

The women each received their own sewing machine to equip them in their new work. The machines were generously donated to MOHI by Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM), a Kenyan church. The graduates are now certified for employment as garment makers in a shop or to start or expand their own businesses making custom pieces for clients.

The Napuu skills training program aspires to recruit 20 new trainees this year. We would also like to offer other courses, like basket-weaving and bead work (jewelry making).
